ProGrade Digital Iridium Cards Selected Due to Their Ability to Pass Difficult Space Environment Testing Criteria

San Jose, CA January 20, 2026, 10:00 am PT — ProGrade Digital™, founded with a mission to provide the highest quality professional grade digital memory cards and workflow solutions announces it has entered into a Space Act agreement with the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) to support the agency’s Artemis moon missions with ProGrade Digital CFexpress Type B Iridium cards in 400GB and 1.6TB capacities as well as ProGrade Digital high- speed memory card readers. ProGrade Digital memory cards were selected from among several commercial off the shelf (COTS) suppliers, due to their ability to sustain high performance, and reliable operation, in a high radiation space environment. ProGrade’s Iridium series of cards exceeded the capability of other CFexpress Type B cards when tested in a space-like environment. ProGrade worked with NASA on the Artemis campaign for over a year and a half to finalize the key deliverables in card design and post-mission support.
“The lunar surface presents very challenging environments for cameras and related storage media,” said Jeremy Myers, HULC Handheld Universal Lunar Camera COTS hardware lead. “The partnership developed between NASA and ProGrade will help ensure images and video are captured reliably when humanity returns to the Moon”.
“ProGrade Digital is extremely proud to have established a space act with NASA to implement our industry leading CFexpress Type B Iridium memory cards, featuring a CFexpress 4.0 interface and VPG 400, Video Performance Guarantee capability,” said Wes Brewer, founder, and CEO of ProGrade Digital. “Through diligent teamwork between the ProGrade San Jose engineering team, NASA’s Space Systems
Department at the Marshall Space Flight Center, and key memory technology supplier – Phison Electronics – we were able to go from sample submission to hardware delivery in just under 18 months. During qualification, our cards were placed into the extreme environmental conditions uniquely encountered in outer space, over many hours of testing to maximize the reliable capture and playback of still images and video in the specially designed Nikon Z9 camera was possible. Perhaps the best part of this accomplishment is for our everyday customers, who can now buy memory cards that will be used in the Handheld Universal Lunar Camera during future Artemis missions.” Added Brewer
NASA’s Artemis campaign is an ambitious and important undertaking for humanity. Artemis will return humanity to the Moon to establish a foundation for long-term scientific lunar research and exploration, eventually leading as a passageway for travel to Mars. This Space Act agreement is a collaboration between NASA and ProGrade Digital Inc. to help ensure that images captured on the missions can survive in lunar environments.

LOS GATOS, Calif.—The CompactFlash Association (CFA), which defines standards for professional removable media such as CFexpress®, CompactFlash®, CFAST®, and XQD®, has released its Video Performance Guarantee Profile 5 (VPG-5).
The VPG standard guarantees high sustained write performance for video capture.
Finalized in November 2024, VPG-5 defines two new classes for CFexpress cards that capture streaming video: VPG800 for 800MB/sec sustained write speed and VPG1600 for 1600MB/sec sustained write speed. Cards that support these new classes are certified by CFA and labeled with the following certification logos:

The new specification extends the VPG standard supporting VPG800 and VPG1600 by utilizing the latest TLC NAND Flash technologies. Tight coupling between the media card and camera guarantees minimum sustained performance for recording high-quality video, ensuring that the camera’s internal buffer memory doesn’t overflow and result in lost frames.
To support higher sustained write performance while using economical TLC NAND Flash, VPG-5 breaks away from VPG-4 backward compatibility, requiring “preconditioning” of the VPG-5 CFexpress card prior to video recording. CFA concluded that this solution provides users with the best cost performance for years to come. Due to the backward incompatibility, users need to be aware that VPG800 and VPG1600 CFexpress cards will not guarantee VPG200 and VPG400 performance. Cards that support VPG200 or VPG400 in addition to VPG800 or VPG1600 will have their respective certification logos on the card label as well.
“The Video Performance Guarantee Profile 5 standard provides professional videographers and photographers with greater performance supporting even higher resolution, higher-dynamic-range video recording while squeezing performance out of the most economical Flash technology today,” says Hiro Ino, CFA president. “CFA is looking out for solutions in the best interests of users.”
“I’m pleased to introduce Video Performance Guarantee Profile 5,” adds Canon’s Hiroshi Noda, CFA co-chairman of the board. “This new specification will enhance the reliability of capturing video footage with CFexpress hosts and cards.”
“The innovative Video Performance Guarantee Profile 5 standard delivers a consistent and premium user experience for both camera manufacturers and consumers, establishing a new benchmark for next-generation high-quality video recording capabilities.” said Hiroshi Machida of Sony Corporation, CFA board member.
